D.C. Doldrums

Every tour comes with at least one show where the audience consists of the other band and not much else. This time around, that show was in D.C. at the Red and the Black. Too bad, too, because the bar had an exciting old-school brothel feel, with tin siding on the walls, very worn wood floors, and nice detailing.

As for the lack of a crowd, in our defense, the other band was also from out of town, and it was a Monday night. In fact, D.C. as a whole seemed pretty dead. There wasn't much going on at the bar downstairs and the streets were quiet.

But the stage at the club (pictured) was warm and welcoming and we tried to make the most of it.

We were lucky to have Jenny's pal Rob there to cheer us on -- especially since the other band didn't seem much into clapping or hooting or anything else between our songs.

We decided to use the low-pressure evening to our advantage by treating it like a band practice. We threw out a song or two we hadn't played yet, and it was good to keep those tunes warm. We also had Rob come up and tell a joke at a particularly low point of the set. He delivered big-time with a hilarious penis joke that we won't get into here, but which perked everyone up.

After the show, we headed back to Rob's. He was a perfect host and we slept in relative luxury.

The following morning it was off to a very good breakfast at Mark's Kitchen in Rob's hood, Tacoma Park -- highly recommended.

Next stop: Richmond!
